Detournement & Me
I am an artist working out of Northern Ontario predominantly in the style of “Detournement.” Developed in the 1950s as a response to propaganda, it was a situationist art movement designed to “turn capitalist media and culture against itself” and render it less powerful by subverting it’s original and/or intended purpose/meaning. This is achieved through a re-contextualization via an artist’s intervention.
Existing Materials
One of the reasons I started doing this in the first place was because I saw how many of these plates were piling up at the thrift store to languish, with many ultimately getting broken and moved along to the garbage over time as they are not exactly a hot commodity. (I actually don’t know who else is buying them besides me to be honest.)
The act of making them something new is as much about reducing landfill and not buying cheap crap made ostensibly by slave labour, to feed over-consumption and hyper-capitalism (ultimately enriching a shitty billionaire man.) The refusal of which is as important to me as the subversive nature of the work I make.
